Ok, this a repeat from my livejournal, but it pissed me off enough that I had to share with the world. People who do not know what they're talking about should keep their opinions to themselves. I'm not saying that I know everything. Far from it. But at least I have an idea as to what I'm talking about and if I'm wrong, I'll admit it. I won't fault anyone for having an opinion, I think that it's wonderful for everyone to have one. It means that we don't follow blindly along without looking at all the options first.
Ok kids, go here: ta-da and that will explain why I am raging here.
First off, this drives me nuts. She is a published author, she should know this already. It is 'addition' not 'edition' when one is talking about a house. An edition is what happens with newspapers, magazines, comic books, etc. An addition is when you add onto an existing building. Get it right. And it's 'government' not 'governd'.
Second, on Katrina. The people who are still in New Orleans ignored the mandatory evacuation that was put into effect THREE DAYS BEFORE KATRINA HIT. The smart ones, like juniperhexum's brother, left early before the shit hit the fan. (I'd link her, but FireFox is being stupid about it. Look in my info and you'll see her.) The ones that are there IGNORED the warning and stayed put, thinking they could ride it out. New Orleans is BELOW SEA LEVEL! IT'S BEEN A SITTING DUCK FOR YEARS! Sorry, but it's true. It's a wonderful city, but with the fact that it sits below sea level and it's almost a freaking island, common sense should have said that it was in danger of being destroyed by a natural disaster.
It is not FEMA's job, or Homeland Security's, to go down there and hold the hands of the people to stupid to leave. It is not their job to go house to house to make sure that grown ups did as they were told. They are NOT the Cavalry (the Cavalry is currently in Iraq anyway), nor it is really the militarys job to do it. They recently send the 82nd down there to do clean up duty. People still there were bitching they didn't want the 82nd there because they're trigger happy. HELLO, they're AIRBORNE! THEY'RE TRAINED TO BE THAT WAY! And any idiot that is still there is probably a military reject with more guns than sense and will shoot first ask later. Sorry, got petty there for a moment.
Moving on.
Bomb threats in airports. Dangerous and deadly, and they're not going to tell a damn civilian if it was a bomb or a box that had a manual alarm clock in it. Why? Because its none of your fucking business. It's been dealt with, move on.
Workers being let go (laid off, fired, however you want to look at it) is because airline travel has gone down in popularity since 9/11. Why? Well gee, did you happen to watch the news that day? Did you see what happened? I don't blame people for preferring to drive or take a bus or a train. I'm the same way. (Though, Greyhound buses were not designed for comfortable traveling.) They have to let people go in order for the company to remain afloat.
As for security being in danger, fat chance. When I went to Savannah Airport to pick up Dennis, I was wearing a dress that was form fitting on top with a loose skirt, leather slip on shoes, and I carried with me a cell phone, a wallet, and my car keys. That's all I had on me. Even my hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail so they knew I wasn't packing a razorblade in my hair (it's been known to happen). I still got put through everything but an anal cavaity search. My shoes were put through the X-ray and wanded, my wallet searched, and my cell phone switched on and off to make sure it wasn't going to explode. I went through the big X-ray and got wanded to make sure I wasn't strapped with anything. And I had a military ID, a pass to go to the gate, and 3 other forms of ID on me. Gee, wonder why they do that? To make sure that 9/11 doesn't happen again. Hell, they were doing that to men and women dressed military uniform. Why? Because you can buy a military uniform at any surplus store. Not that hard, we've done it because they're cheaper than buying them on post.
As for the government taking away freedoms (like freedom of speech, which I haven't seen happen anywhere, or Kenye West would have had his trap shut awhile ago) I don't see it happening. For our rights to be taken away, EVERY SINGLE GOVERNMENT OFFIAL WOULD HAVE TO VOTE TO TAKE THEM AWAY. Ok, not every single one, but the majority of them would have to do so.
You are entitled to your opinion, I fully support people voicing their opinion on a regular basis. Goddess knows I voice mine every chance I get. But please, make sure you're educated on what you're opinionated about. Don't fly off the handle because you don't like how something is happening. I don't know everything in the world, I know just enough to keep me from getting into trouble. But I'm passionate about it, and I try to make sure my facts are correct when I state them. She could have avoided sounding like a moron if she'd read the newspaper or the reports online or anything like that, instead of hearing by word of mouth and taking that as gospel.
And for fuck's sake, USE SPELL CHECK! She's published, a best selling author, and she can't spell to save her life! GAH!
